What NOT to do when using an operator basket: a guide to safety
We know that working at height can be stressful, but a smile never hurts, especially when it helps us remember the safety rules! So, get comfortable (but not too comfortable, please!) and read carefully.
Here are some mistakes not to make when using the work basket:
Leaving your fall prevention harness at home

Did you think you could enjoy the view without discomfort? Mistake! Not wearing a fall arrest harness is like bungee jumping without a rope. Always make sure you wear an EN 361 CE harness and attach it correctly: it’s not just a safety belt, it’s your lifesaver! Together with an EN 355 CE energy absorber that reduces the force of impact in the event of a fall.
Don't worry about the helmet
If you think that a protective helmet ruins your hairstyle, consider instead how much more ruinous a blow to the head would be without a safety helmet complying with EN 397 or EN 20365 CE. Wear it at all times, and don’t forget that it must have a non-removable chin strap: helmets are not baseball caps!

Ignoring the seat belt

Attaching the seat belt to the basket hook is boring, isn’t it? Well, ignoring it could make your day much more adventurous, but not in the way you want. Not only wear the belt, but always check that it is securely fastened.
Getting close to live electrical cables
Do you love the thrill of adrenalin? Getting close to electric cables is a sure way to get it… but not the right one! Always keep a distance of at least 5 metres. Your day will be much less thrilling, but infinitely safer.

Challenging the wind like a hero

Feeling like Superman in the middle of a storm may be fascinating, but with wind gusts over 12 m/s, your flight could be real. If the wind blows too hard, it is best to postpone using the basket.
Transporting materials like a pick-up truck
Who said that the basket only has to support the stated weight? Well, all the safety manuals! Avoid overloads and transverse loads: respecting the limits will keep you away from unpleasant surprises.

Playing with security systems

Modifying or tampering with security systems? Only if you have a secret passion for chaos! Every seal has a reason to exist. Removing it could lead to serious consequences… and we’re not talking about a reprimand.
Working without a colleague on the ground
Even if you feel you are the king of solitude, never use the basket without another person on the ground ready to help you. Safety is a team: play as a team!

The operator’s basket is an incredibly useful tool, but it must be used with your head on your shoulders and with all the necessary safety measures. So before going up, check everything, wear the right equipment and follow these simple rules. That way you can work safely and maybe tell people how your work at 30 metres is a walk in the park… safely!
